The Anishinabe of Wauzhushk Onigum Nation, also known as Rat Portage, is a Treaty 3 Anishinaabe community on the north shore of Lake of the Woods, near Kenora, Ontario.
Wazhashk-Onigam Anishinaabeg, often called Rat Portage, are an Anishinaabe Nation based on the north shore of Lake of the Woods. The name roughly means "portage to the country of the muskrats." Before Treaty 3, three Anishinabe groups lived around what is now Kenora, and Wauzhushk Onigum was the largest. The Hudson's Bay Company named its trading post after the place, and the town that grew around it was renamed Kenora in 1905.
In 1873, Ojibwe Chiefs signed Treaty 3 with the Crown, believing they were entering a resource-sharing agreement. Today the Nation's reserves include:
Culture is part of everyday life. The Nation hosts the annual Honouring Our Children traditional powwow on Pow Wow Island, which the Nation owns, and Elders visit to teach Ojibway culture, including crafts and bannock-making.
The Nation owns and runs the Golden Eagle Casino & Gaming Centre, and in 2012 it used casino proceeds to set up an education endowment fund. Community services include a public library, a medical clinic, the Kinew Child Care Centre, and programs such as the Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative, Brighter Futures and Community Wellness.
